It has two octaves and a sweet, rich and resonating sound. Ok, so lots of folks have been after me for several years now about making more dulcimer hammers. People that aren't familiar with them want to know what they look like and how they feel. The Appalachian mountain dulcimer is an American folk instrument and comes in all sizes and shapes: from a rectangular Tennessee music box to highly ornately curved violin-like shapes. People made them with whatever local materials that were readily available to them and traced the shapes that were pleasing to them. Introducing the m4, a revolutionary instrument, inspired by the dulcimer making the often difficult task of learning to play guitar, that much easier. People young and all of all ages will get a kick out of picking this instrument up and strumming along for the first time. Charlie Alm has written a book on Hammered Dulcimers. Organologically, the Appalachian dulcimer is a plucked box-zither; it is considered to be a folk instrument. Appalachian dulcimers are traditionally constructed of wood, and early instruments were typically made all of one wood, using wood commonly found in the particular area of the mountains where the builder lived. Most of the dulcimer players in my group have dulcimers made of cherry or walnut, but several have qtr. sawn sycamore, oak, spalted maple. It is not unusual to have a body of one wood and a top of a contrasting wood.
